“Have you called your mother today?” Whenever we are visiting with some of our elderly Sisters, one of them loves to ask us this question. She is referring to Mary and reminding us to call on her and spend time with her every day of our lives. This Sister is a shining example of this. She has a true devotion to Our Blessed Mother. Every day when she is wheeled to adoration, whoever is with her stops in front of the statue of Mary in the main chapel. There, she sings a hymn to Mary before going to the adoration chapel for time with the Lord. I have been blessed to witness this many times, and her beautiful love and devotion for Our Lady never ceases to touch my heart. Again and again I ask myself her question: “Have you called your mother today? What does this mean for me? What does this look like?”
The month of May presents a wonderful opportunity to ponder this question more deeply. How am I strengthening and deepening my relationship with Mary? The postulants and novices have decided to give Our Lady daily petitions, prayers, or small sacrifices written on paper flowers and placed underneath her statue during this month of May. We also held a May Crowning with songs, prayers, and meditations asking Our Lady for her help and intercession. Each day we pray an Act of Consecration to Our Lady entrusting our vocation into her motherly hands. All of these communal practices have helped strengthen my love for Our Blessed Mother, and I realize the importance of private moments with Our Lady too. How can I grow closer to you, Mary, so that you may lead me closer to Jesus? That is my question and my prayer this month. Perhaps you might like to make it yours as well. Have you called your mother today?
